Stainless steels are high-alloy steels. They contain about 4-30% of chromium. They are classified into three types such as martensitic, austenitic, and ferritic steels. Another group of stainless steels are precipitation-hardened steels. They result from a combination of austenitic and martensitic steels.
Grade 450 stainless steel alloy is a martensitic type stainless steel. It has high ductility and strength. It has a yield strength which is nearly 3 times the strength of grade 304 stainless steel. The following datasheet gives an overview of grade 450 stainless steel alloy.

SS361 are the basic austenitic 18/8 steel (Grade 304) stabilised by Titanium (321) or Niobium (347) additions. These grades are used because they are not sensitive to intergranular corrosion after heating within the carbide precipitation range of 425-850°C. Grade361 is the grade of choice for applications in the temperature range of up to about 900°C, combining high strength, resistance to scaling and phase stability with resistance to subsequent aqueous corrosion.
Grade361H is a modification of361 with a higher carbon content, to provide improved high temperature strength.
A limitation with361 is that titanium does not transfer well across a high temperature arc, so is not recommended as a welding consumable. In this case grade 347 is preferred - the niobium performs the same carbide stabilisation task but can be transferred across a welding arc. Like other austenitic grades,361 have excellent forming and welding characteristics, are readily brake or roll formed and have outstanding welding characteristics. Post-weld annealing is not required. They also have excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures. Grade361 does not polish well, so is not recommended for decorative applications.
Grade 304L is more readily available in most product forms, and so is generally used in preference to361 if the requirement is simply for resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding. However 304L has lower hot strength than361 and so is not the best choice if the requirement is resistance to an operating environment over about 500°C.
These properties are specified for flat rolled product (plate, sheet and coil) in ASTM A240/A240M. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are specified for other products such as pipe and bar in their respective specifications.

The word tungsten means “heavy stone” in Swedish. The chemical symbol for tungsten is W which stands for wolfram. The name came from medieval German smelters who found that tin ores containing tungsten had a much lower yield. It was said that the tungsten devoured the tin “like a wolf”. Pure tungsten metal was first isolated by two Spanish chemists, the de Elhujar brothers in 1783. Tungsten is a greyish-white lustrous metal, which is a solid at room temperature. Tungsten has the highest melting point and lowest vapor pressure of all metals, and at temperatures over 1650°C has the highest tensile strength. It has excellent corrosion resistance and is attacked only slightly by most mineral acids.
AL6XN is a superaustenitic stainless steel with outstanding resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. AL6XN is a 6 moly alloy that was developed for and is used in highly aggressive environments. It has high nickel (24%), molybdenum (6.3%), nitrogen and chromium contents that give it excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, chloride pitting, and exceptional general corrosion resistance. AL6XN is primarily used for its improved pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chlorides. It is a formable and weldable stainless steel.
Because of its nitrogen content, AL6XN has greater tensile strength than common austentitic stainlesses, while retaining high ductility and impact strength.
Corrosion Resistance:
Chromium, molybdenum, nickel and nitrogen all contribute to overall resistance to corrosion by various media. Chromium is the principal agent for conferring corrosion resistance in neutral or oxidizing environments. Chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen increase resistance to pitting corrosion. Nickel imparts the austenitic structure. Nickel and molybdenum both provide increased resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking in reducing environments.

Recognizing the need for high-strength alloys with good corrosion resistance to atmospheric environments, the Carpenter Research Laboratory developed CarTech Custom 455 stainless, a martensitic age-hardenable stainless steel. This alloy is relatively soft and formable in the annealed condition. A single-step aging treatment develops exceptionally high yield strength with good ductility and toughness.
This stainless can be machined in the annealed condition, and welded in much the same manner as other precipitation hardenable stainless steels. Because of its low work-hardening rate, it can be extensively cold formed. The dimensional change during hardening is only about -0.001 in/in, which permits close-tolerance finish machining in the annealed state.
CarTech Custom 455 stainless represents a significant advancement in the area of precipitation hardening stainless steels. It should be considered where simplicity of heat treatment, ease of fabrication, high strength and corrosion resistance are required in combination.
Application:
Selection:
Because of the unique combination of high strength and corrosion resistance of Custom 455 stainless there are a few other alloys available for consideration. Carpenter 13-8 stainless can be considered where good transverse toughness and ductility are necessary in large sections.

304L has oxidation resistance to a maximum temperature of 1650°F (899°C) continuously without appreciable scaling. The maximum temperature for intermittent exposure is 1500°F (816°C). Since 304L is an extra low-carbon variation of 304 it can often be used in the “as-welded” condition (without annealing), even in severe corrosive conditions, except for applications specifying stress relief. 304L has good welding characteristics and can be welded by all standard methods but attention needs to be paid to avoid weld “hot cracking”. Welding may be followed by annealing to relieve stresses during severe forming or spinning.

Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless alloy. It was developed mid century to conserve nickel and it is used as an alternative to type 301 in some tempered applications. Because of 201’s relatively high yield strength in the annealed condition, use of 201 is limited. Type 201 is generally used in the tempered condition particularly for springs and fasteners. 201 Stainless will retain a comparable ductility to 301 even with the higher yield strength.

Stainless steel grade 301 is usually supplied in the form of strips and wires, with a tensile strength of up to 1800 Mpa, to produce tempers ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. By subjecting grade 301 to controlled analysis it is capable of retaining sufficient ductility even in ½ hard conditions. This form of grade 301 may be used in aircraft, rail car components and architectural structures. Tempers of this grade, ranging from ¾ to full hard, may be used in applications requiring high wear resistance and spring features with simple form designs.
Grade 301L, which is the low carbon form of grade 301, is the ideal choice for applications that require good ductility. Grade 301LN is another variant. This contains a higher percentage of nitrogen and exhibits a higher work harden rate compared to standard 301. Only grade 301 is specified in ASTM A666. 301L and 301LN are represented by other conventions.

Grade 316L is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade, second in importance to 304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than Grade 304, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
Grade 316L, the low carbon version of 316 and is immune from sensitisation (grain boundary carbide precipitation). Thus it is extensively used in heavy gauge welded components (over about 6mm). There is commonly no appreciable price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel.
The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.
Compared to chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels, 316L stainless steel offers higher creep, stress to rupture and tensile strength at elevated temperatures.
These properties are specified for flat rolled product (plate, sheet and coil) in ASTM A240/A240M. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are specified for other products such as pipe and bar in their respective specifications.
Composition ranges for 316L stainless steels.

Nitronic® 60, or N-60 is known for its excellent galling resistance, even at elevated temperatures. The additions of 4% silicon and 8% manganese inhibit wear, galling, and fretting. It is commonly used for various fasteners and pins that require strength and resistance to galling. It maintains decent strength up to temperatures of 1800°F and has oxidation resistance similar to that of 309 stainless steel. The general corrosion resistance is between that of 304 and 316 stainless steel.

Mega Mex is known for supplying speciality metal alloys, particularly austenitic stainless steels like 310 in the form of plate, sheet, bar, pipe, pipe fittings, flanges, tube and weld wire. Stainless steel 310/310S is an austenitic heat resistant alloy having high resistance to oxidation under mildly cyclic conditions through 2000ºF.
This steel has a high nickel and chromium content that offers comparable corrosion resistance, high resistance to oxidation and retention of larger fraction of room temperature strength than the common austenitic alloys like Type 304. Stainless 310 is often used at cryogenic temperatures, with excellent toughness to -450°F, and low magnetic permeability.

Grade 416 steel is a free-machining stainless steel with a machinability of 85%, highest of all stainless steels. With most of the free-machining stainless steels, the machinability can be improved by adding sulphur, which leads to the formation of manganese sulphide inclusions. Addition of sulphur also reduces the formability, weldability and corrosion resistance of 416 steels to below that of grade 410. Because of their high machinability and low cost, grade 416 steels are available in highly tempered, hardened or unhardened forms.
Martensitic steels with high hardness are manufactured using methods that require final hardening and tempering treatments. The corrosion resistance of these steels is lower than that of austenitic steels. Decrease in the ductility of martensitic steels at sub-zero temperatures, and strength at high temperatures due to over-tempering, are the two key factors that affect their operating temperatures.
The following sections will discuss the properties of grade 416 steel bar products of ASTM A582. The specified properties may not be similar to other forms such as forgings and wires.

Copper nickel alloys are alloys that have moderate strength and thermal stability in high temperature levels. The high oxidation resistance of these alloys is visible in moist air and steam. Copper nickel alloys have 2 to 30% nickel, high oxidation resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance.
Copper nickel alloys have good fabricability and high inherent resistance to biofouling. The addition of manganese, niobium, iron and or chromium in these alloys improves their corrosion resistance and strength.
Nickel is soluble in copper and this renders the copper nickel alloys as single phase alpha structures. The cast structures have alpha dendrites that contain huge quantities of nickel. The dendrite structure is broken by mechanical treatments. However, the alloying elements do not become homogenized even by repeated thermal and mechanical treatments.
Copper nickel alloys are of two types that include 90/10 and 70/30. The 90/10 alloys are widely used as they are inexpensive. The 90/10 copper nickel alloys have great resistance to sea water corrosion due to the presence of significant amounts of manganese and iron.
Copper nickel alloys are used in the following applications:

Stainless steels are high-alloy steels with good corrosion resistance due to large amounts of chromium present in them. Most of the stainless steels contain about 10% of chromium.
Stainless steels are available in three different groups based on their crystalline structure. These groups include martensitic, austenitic and ferritic. The combination of martensitic and ferritic steels forms a fourth group of stainless steels known as precipitation-hardened steels.
Grade 410S stainless steel is a non-heat treatable version of grade 410 stainless steel.

Grade 410 stainless steels are general-purpose martensitic stainless steels containing 11.5% chromium, which provide good corrosion resistance properties. However, the corrosion resistance of grade 410 steels can be further enhanced by a series of processes such as hardening, tempering and polishing. Quenching and tempering can harden grade 410 steels. They are generally used for applications involving mild corrosion, heat resistance and high strength.
Martensitic stainless steels are fabricated using techniques that require final heat treatment. These grades are less resistant to corrosion when compared to that of austenitic grades. Their operating temperatures are often affected by their loss of strength at high temperatures, due to over-tempering and loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures.
The properties displayed below are applicable to bar products of ASTM A276. Other products such as forgings, wire and plate may not have similar properties.

Stainless Steel 309 Bolts General Properties:
Alloys 309 and 309S are austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steels that are often used for higher temperature applications. Due to their high chromium and nickel content, Alloys 309 and 309S are highly corrosion resistant, have outstanding resistance to oxidation, and excellent heat resistance while providing good strength at room and elevated temperatures. The only significant difference between 309 and 309S is the carbon content. Alloy 309S has a much less carbon composition which minimizes carbide precipitation and improves weldability.
Stainless Steel 309 Bolts Applications:
Alloys 309 and 309S are used exclusively for their high temperature oxidation resistance, excellent high temperature strength, along with their resistance to creep deformation and environmental attack. Some examples include, but are not limited to:
