A-286 Iron-Based Super Alloy

A-286 is an age-hardenable iron base superalloy for applications requiring high strength from -320°F up to 1000°F long time, 1300-1500°F short time. Oxidation resistance is high for continuous service to 1500°F, intermittent to 1800°F. Aqueous corrosion resistance is comparable to 316/L stainless.

Product Details:

UNS S15700 is a semi-austenitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel that provides high strength and hardness, good corrosion resistance, and minimum distortion on heat treatment. It is easily formed in the annealed condition and develops an effective balance of properties by simple heat treatments. For application requiring exceptionally high strength, cold-reduced UNS S15700 Stainless Steel in Condition CH 900 is particularly useful for applications permitting limited ductility and workability. This alloy is particularly beneficial for a wide range of applications that include retaining rings, springs, diaphragms, aircraft bulkheads, welded and brazed honey comb paneling and other aircraft components requiring high strength at elevated temperatures.

UNS S15700 Stainless Steel Heat Treatment:
UNS S15700 Stainless Steel requires three essential steps in heat treating:

• Austenite conditioning,
• Cooling to transform the austenite to martensite and
• Precipitation hardening.

The material normally is supplied from the mill in Condition A. After fabrication, an austenite conditioning treatment is followed by a transformation treatment to either Condition T or Condition R100. Then the material is precipitation hardened to either Condition TH 1050 or Condition RH 950 to develop fully useable properties.
To obtain the highest mechanical properties in this alloy, Condition A is transformed to martensite at the mill by cold reduction to Condition C. After fabrication by the user, hardening to Condition CH 900 is accomplished with a single low temperature heat treatment.

Product Details:

The 15-5 PH alloy was designed to have greater toughness than 17-4 PH. The 15-5 PH alloy is martensitic in structure in the annealed condition and is further strengthened by a relatively low temperature heat treatment which precipitates a copper containing phase in the alloy. 15-5 PH is also referred to as XM-12 in some specifications.

Stainless steel 15 – 5 PH, also known as XM-12 or UNS S15500, is a modification of 17-4 PH developed in the 1960s. It has a more refined microstructure obtained through the remelting process. This refined structure improves toughness of the material. UNS S15500 also has low temperature hardening, good fabrication properties and excellent corrosion resistance, which makes it suitable for many industries. It can be machined in the solution-annealed state or in final heat treat condition. The strength and ductility of UNS S15500 can be enhanced through heating the material at different temperatures.

UNS S15500 is a martensitic precipitation hardening type stainless steel. Martensitic stainless steels were designed to be corrosion resistant and hardened through heat treatment.

15-5 PH is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel that provides an outstanding combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties at temperatures up to 600°F (316°C) and good toughness in both the longitudinal and transverse directions in both base metal and welds. Short-time, low-temperature heat treatments minimize distortion and scaling. This alloy is air melted and AOD refined. For data not available on this alloy, use AK Steel 17-4 PH Stainless Steel sheet data as a guideline when available.
