Inconel 601 is a solid solution nickel chromium alloy for high temperature heat resistance. It has excellent oxidation resistance. Inconel 601 also has good resistance to carburising but should not be used in atmospheres containing sulphur, particularly reducing sulphur. Inconel 601 has good resistance to nitriding in dissociated ammonia, and is only outperformed by Inconel 600 in this application. Inconel 601 has good strength, ductility and toughness, and can be used at cryogenic temperatures.
Typical Applications:
Thermal processing equipment – baskets, trays, fixtures, radiant tubes, muffles, retorts, flame shields, woven wire conveyers, burner nozzles and electrical resistance heating wires. Other applications include thermocouple protection tubes, process heaters, condenser tubes, catalyst supports in nitric acid manufacture, exhaust systems in gasoline engines and combustion chambers, superheater tube supports and ash handling in power generation.

INCOLOY alloys belong to the category of super austenitic stainless steels. These alloys have nickel-chromium-iron as the base metals, with additives such as molybdenum, copper, nitrogen and silicon. These alloys are known for their excellent strength at elevated temperatures and good corrosion resistance in a variety of corrosive environments.
INCOLOY alloy 800 is an alloy of nickel, iron and chromium. The alloy is capable of remaining stable and maintaining its austenitic structure even after long time exposures to high temperatures. Other characteristics of the alloy are good strength, and high resistance to oxidizing, reducing and aqueous environments. The standard forms in which this alloy is available are round, flats, forging stock, tube, plate, sheet, wire and strip.
This datasheet will look into the chemical composition, properties and applications of INCOLOY 800.
The chemical composition of INCOLOY alloy 800 is given in the following table.

The limiting chemical composition of INCONEL alloy 600 is shown in Table 1. The high nickel content gives the alloy resistance to corrosion by many organic and inorganic compounds and also makes it virtually immune to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking. Chromium confers resistance to sulfur compounds and also provides resistance to oxidizing conditions at high temperatures or in corrosive solutions. The alloy is not precipitation hardenable; it is hardened and strengthened only by cold work.
The versatility of INCONEL alloy 600 has led to its use in a variety of applications involving temperatures from cryogenic to above 2000°F (1095°C).
The alloy is used extensively in the chemical industry for its strength and corrosion resistance. Applications include heaters, stills, bubble towers and condensers for processing of fatty acids; evaporator tubes, tube sheets and flaking trays for the manufacture of sodium sulfide; and equipment for handling abietic acid in the manufacture of paper pulp.
The alloy’s strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures make it useful for many applications in the heat-treating industry. It is used for retorts, muffles, roller hearths and other furnace components and for heat-treating baskets and trays.
In the aeronautical field, INCONEL alloy 600 is used for a variety of engine and airframe components which must withstand high temperatures. Examples are lockwire, exhaust liners and turbine seals.
INCONEL alloy 600 is used in the electronic field for such parts as cathode-ray tube spiders, thyratron grids, tube support members and springs. The alloy is a standard material of construction for nuclear reactors. It has excellent resistance to corrosion by high-purity water, and no indication of chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking in reactor water systems has been detected. For nuclear applications, the alloy is produced to exacting specifications and is designated INCONEL alloy 600T.

High levels of nickel and chromium provide corrosion resistance in reducing and oxidizing environments. The substantial molybdenum content enhances resistance to reducing media and provides a high degree of resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Additionally, the combination of elements makes the alloy resistant to hydrogen embrittlement and stresscorrosion cracking. The properties of INCONEL alloy 725 are useful for a range of applications that require outstanding corrosion resistance along with high strength. The alloy is used for hangers, landing nipples, side pocket mandrels and polished bore eceptacles in sour gas service, where it resists the effects of hydrogen sulfide, chlorides and carbon dioxide. The alloy is also attractive for high strength fasteners in marine applications, where it resists corrosion, pitting and crevice attack in sea water.
