Introduction

Cold-work tool steels are high carbon steels that are further classified into three subgroups such as oil-hardening steels, high-carbon, high-chromium steels, and air-hardening steels. Oil-hardening cold-work steels are also known as group O steels consisting of O1, O2, O6, and O7 types.

Type O1 oil-hardening cold-work steel consists of chromium, manganese, and tungsten and is relatively inexpensive.

AISI D2 steel is an air hardening, high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel. It has high wear and abrasion resistant properties. It is heat treatable and will offer a hardness in the range 55-62 HRC, and is machinable in the annealed condition. AISI D2 steel shows little distortion on correct hardening. AISI D2 steel’s high chromium content gives it mild corrosion resisting properties in the hardened condition.

If you need better machinability then consider A2 tool steel which has a chromium content of 5% and is more readily machinable.

Forging:

Heat slowly and uniformly to 700°C then more rapidly to 900/1040°C. Do not continue to forge AISI D2 below 925°C. Reheat as often as necessary to maintain proper forging temperature. After forging cool slowly. This is not an annealing process. After the forging is cold, it must be annealed as described below.

AISI D3 steel, also know as 1.2080 (Werkstoff), is an air hardening, high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel. It displays excellent abrasion/wear resistance and has good dimensional stability and high compressive strength.

It is heat treatable and will offer a hardness in the range 58-64 HRC. Due to its abrasion resistance in the hardened condition, AISI D3 machining should be limited to finished grinding.

If you need better machinability then consider A2 tool steel which has a chromium content of 5% and is more readily machinable.

Annealing:

Heat uniformly to 850-870°C, soak thoroughly, then slow furnace cool at a rate of not more than 25°C per hour to 650°C. The parts may then be air cooled. This should result in a maximum hardness of brinell 248.

Hardening:

AISI D3 tool steel is extremely sensitive to overheating during hardening – do not overheat.

Pre heat slowly to 800-850°C, the raise rapidly to 950-970°C and soak until completely equalised. Quench in oil.

Stress Relieving:

Heat to 650-700ºC. Soak for 2-4 hours then furnace cool.

Tempering:

Heat uniformly and thoroughly to the desired temperature and hold for 25 minutes per cm of thickness. AISI D3 can be double tempered after intermediate cooling to room temperature.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the machining characteristics of AISI D5 tool steel in wire electrical discharge machining process. During experiments, parameters such as open circuit voltage, pulse duration, wire speed and dielectric fluid pressure were changed to explore their effect on the surface roughness and metallurgical structure. Optical and scanning electron microscopy, surface roughness and microhardness tests were used to study the characteristics of the machined specimens. Taking into consideration the experimental results, it is found that the intensity of the process energy does affect the amount of recast and surface roughness as well as microcracking, the wire speed and dielectric fluid pressure not seeming to have much of an influence

Stainless steel types AISI A5 are also known as grades 316 and 316L respectively. Grade 316 is an austenitic grade second only to 304 in commercial importance. 316 stainless steel contains an addition of molybdenum that gives it improved corrosion resistance. This is particularly apparent for pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. 316L, the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel, is immune to grain boundary carbide precipitation (sensitisation). This makes it suited to use in heavy gauge (over about 6mm) welded components. For elevated temperature applications the high carbon variant, 316H stainless steel and the stabilised grade AISI A5 stainless steel should be employed. The austenitic structure of 316 stainless steel gives excellent toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures. Property data given in this document is typical for flat rolled products covered by ASTM A240/A240M. ASTM, EN or other standards may cover products sold. It is reasonable to expect specifications in these standards to be similar but not necessarily identical to those given in this datasheet.

Stainless steel grade AISI A5 contains a small amount of titanium. Titanium content is typically only around 0.5%. The titanium atoms stabilise the structure of the 316 at temperatures over 800°C. This prevents carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries and protects the metal from corrosion. The main advantage of AISI A5 is that it can be held at higher temperatures for a longer period without sensitisation (precipitation) occurring. AISI A5 retains physical and mechanical properties similar to standard grades of 316.

AISI A6 de-carb free tool steel is an air hardening tool steel with higher manganese and lower chromium and carbon than A2, offering moderate wear resistance and toughness. It has the advantage of hardening from a lower austenitizing temperature for easy heat treatment.AISI A6 hardens with very little movement or distortion. A6 offers medium resistance to softening at elevated work temperatures, medium to high resistance to decarburization, and has good machinability. One main advantage of AISI A6 is its deep hardening with high safety in hardening.

APPLICATIONS

Typical applications for A6 tool steel are blanking dies, forming dies, trim dies, stamping dies, coining dies, notching dies, bending tools, rim rolls, punches, cams, thread roll dies, spindles, retaining rings, master hobs, precision tools, mandrels, compression molds, plastic molds requiring high hardness, ball screws, lead screws, general purpose tooling, etc.

HEAT TREATING

FORGING

Heating for forging must be done slowly and uniformly. Soak through at 1900°-2000°F and reheat as often as necessary, stopping work when the temperature drops below 1600°F. After forging, cool slowly in lime, mica, dry ashes or furnace. A6 should always be annealed after forging.

ANNEALING

Heat slowly to 1350°-1375°F, hold until entire mass is heated through, and cool slowly in the furnace (20F per hour) to about 1000°F, after which cooling rate may be increased. Suitable precautions must be taken to prevent excessive carburization or decarburization.

STRESS RELIEVING

When desirable to relieve the strains of machining, heat slowly to 1050°-1250°F, allow to equalize, and then cool in still air (Strain Relieving).

PREHEAT PRIOR TO HARDENING

Preheating is often not necessary depending on the size and complexity of the part. If a preheat is desirable, a 1200°-1250°F temperature should be used. Heat slowly.

HARDENING

Parts at room temperature or as pre-heated should be placed in a hardening furnace operating at 1525°-1600°F. After parts have reached the furnace temperature, hold 20 minutes for small parts and up to 45 minutes for large parts

AISI A2 tool steel is an air hardening, cold work steel. AISI A2 is a 5% Chromium steel which provides high hardness after heat treatment with good dimensional stability. It is heat treatable and will offer a hardness in the range 57-62 HRC.

The lower chromium content in A2 tool steel means that it does not provide the same wear and abrasion resistance shown by D2 and D3, However, it is more easily machined and will hold a good edge.

AISI A2 delivers good toughness with medium wear resistance and is relatively easy to machine. Used in many applications which require good wear resistance as well as good toughness.

Forging:

Heat the A2 slowly to 700°C then more rapidly to 1050-1100°C. Avoid working below 900°C. Reheat as often as necessary to maintain proper forging temperature. After forging cool very slowly.

Annealing:

Soak thoroughly at 840-850°C, then slowly furnace cool at a rate of not more than 20°C per hour. After annealing A2 a maximum hardness of 215 Brinell may be achieved.

Stress relieving:

After heavy grinding or machine it is advisable to stress relieve A2 to reduce the danger of cracking or distortion during subsequent heat treatments. Heat slowly to 670-700°C, soak for a minimum of two hours per 25mm of section then cool down in the furnace.

Hardening:

Pre heat slowly to 600-700°C and soak. Continue heating to the final hardening temperature of 950/980°C and allow the component to equalise. Quench in oil or cool in air.

Tempering:

Heat uniformly and thoroughly to the desired temperature and hold for 25 minutes per cm of thickness. A2 tool steel can be double tempering, after intermediate cooling to room temperature. Temper at 200°C for a balance of hardness and strength or 350°C where strength is more important than hardness.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the machining characteristics of AISI A3 tool steel in wire electrical discharge machining process. During experiments, parameters such as open circuit voltage, pulse duration, wire speed and dielectric fluid pressure were changed to explore their effect on the surface roughness and metallurgical structure. Optical and scanning electron microscopy, surface roughness and microhardness tests were used to study the characteristics of the machined specimens. Taking into consideration the experimental results, it is found that the intensity of the process energy does affect the amount of recast and surface roughness as well as microcracking, the wire speed and dielectric fluid pressure not seeming to have much of an influence

ASTM A-105 Steels are alloys of iron and carbon, widely used in construction and other applications because of their high tensile strengths and low costs. Carbon, other elements, and inclusions within iron act as hardening agents that prevent the movement of dislocations that otherwise occur in the crystal lattices of iron atoms.The carbon in typical steel alloys may contribute up to 2.1% of its weight. Varying the amount of alloying elements, their formation in the steel either as solute elements, or as precipitated phases, retards the movement of those dislocations that make iron so ductile and weak, and thus controls qualities such as the hardness, ductility, and tensile strength of the resulting steel. Steel’s strength compared to pure iron is only possible at the expense of ductility, of which iron has an excess.
